What is Golden State?

Welcome to Golden State. It’s good to have you here! This is a weekly letter where I explore fundamental pillars of health and the tools to build a more vibrant life. 

I’m here to offer authentic, practical health suggestions that counterbalance trends or short term perspectives. I think that there’s a gap in the middle for sincere, gentle guidance that isn’t fadish in nature, mostly through the lens of food and nutrition. 

Golden State's concept of better daily health and vitality centres on three core ideas: 

  1. Consistency heals! For most of us, gentle sustainable improvements can have a huge impact on our health over time. Compound interest applies to so many areas of life - building businesses, raising children, nurturing relationships, our health - not just to your investment account.

  2. We are all unique individuals who are in process. We’re not ever a finished product, and our approach to health should adjust to recognise this. This means less pressure, less perfection, and more interest in the PROCESS. 

  3. Curiosity. Learning to relate to our body in a new way relies on becoming interested in bodily functioning, healthful foods and routines, and how these mix together.

Each weekly letter will focus on a core topic plus other tips and things that are connected or in my orbit right now. Sometimes I’ll link to a product or something I really love.

What to expect: 

  • my thoughts on establishing and maintaining healthy routines

  • mindful, nourishing eating habits

  • tips on how live a more vibrant life

  • an enthusiastic, sincere approach to everything health and vitality

  • occasional product recomms + simple ideas from the healthy kitchen

How often do you publish?

Once a week, on Thursdays. I like the complementary parallel between producing something of value (I hope!) weekly, alongside the necessity of consistency and rhythm in our move towards improved vitality. Writing this newsletter is one of the ways I like to exercise my own muscles of consistency and rhythm. I plan to show up without fail; sharing, guiding and learning so that others might try out new habits and routines, and have a better experience of their health and wellbeing. The newsletter is free to everyone.

Who are you?

I’m Sophie. I live in New Zealand and have two young daughters with my husband Tom. He’s a chef and restaurant owner. Together we’ve informally explored health and wellbeing through the lens of nutrition for over 10 years.

I experienced confidence shattering hormonal acne for all of my 20s and early 30s. Coupled with one too many rounds of antibiotics, plus a particularly bad allergic reaction that ended with a visit to the emergency medical clinic, and I realised I had to start doing things differently. Slowly, I turned my health around. It’s taken a decade of learning, unlearning, questioning and slowly building new routines to understand what living well, and in good health, can mean. And I’m still on the journey!

I’m currently studying with The Academy of Healing Nutrition, a school based out of New York and London.
